Riverside, California (NAPSI) - Here’s a cool scoop. If you are looking for a way to celebrate National Ice Cream Month which is July and chill out on National Ice Cream Day in particular, which happens to be this Sunday, why not give some love to that all-American favorite, Rocky Road?

A Favorite Flavor

The flavor was created in 1929 by William Dreyer in Oakland, California when he cut up walnuts and marshmallows with his wife’s sewing scissors and added them to his chocolate ice cream in a manner that reflected his partner Joseph Edy’s chocolate candy creation, incorporating walnuts and marshmallow pieces.

After the Wall Street Crash of 1929, Dreyer and Edy gave the flavor its current name “to give folks something to smile about in the midst of the Great Depression.”

Typical ingredients today—chocolate, almonds (originally used walnuts) and marshmallows.

According to a recent survey by Behavioral Food Expert Juliet A. Boghossian and Baskin-Robbins, Rocky Road ranks 4th among the top 10 ice cream flavors that make people the happiest.

A New Feel-Good Movie

You can continue your celebration of National Ice Cream Day by sitting back with a scoop or two of Rocky Road and enjoying a sweet summer movie of the same name.

Rocky Road is a heartwarming, timely story about Harrison Burke, an out-of-luck Wall Street investment banker who finds himself back at home and working for his dad’s ice cream truck business.

This UP television network original movie stars actor/singer-songwriter Mark Salling (Harrison), best known for his work in the hit show Glee, in his first leading-man role. Plus, Salling and Mark Miller wrote and performed an original song for the film entitled Back At the Starting Line (watch it at www.UPtv.com/RockyRoad).

The ensemble cast also includes Nicholas Campbell (Haven, A Heartland Christmas) and Deborah Tennant (Haven, Copper) as Harrison’s parents Ben and Marla who are surprised and thrilled, but suspicious about his return home; sidekick and fellow route driver Jahmil French (Degrassi: The Next Generation) as Razor; and Rebecca Dalton (Spun Out, The L.A. Complex) as his old girlfriend Suzie Barnes. The film is directed by Emmy® Award winner Brian K. Roberts (Everybody Loves Raymond). Tippi and Neal Dobrofsky (Window Wonderland, Guess Who’s Coming to Christmas) wrote the script.

UP is the television network dedicated to uplifting viewers every day with original movies, reality, drama and comedy series and music specials.

“We’re happy to present Rocky Road on July 20th, as America celebrates a great American summer treat with National Ice Cream Day,” said Sophia Kelley, senior vice president of programming, UP. “Like this enduring flavor of ice cream—celebrating its 85th birthday in 2014--this film showcases the strength of Mark Salling’s character, Harrison, as he finds a simpler, sweeter life at home by returning to his family’s ice cream truck business to help his dad through a sticky situation.”

Rocky Road premieres on Sunday, July 20 at 8 p.m. ET and 7 p.m. PT. Check your local listings.
