When the top seeded team from the West meets the Top seeded team from the east in a basketball championship the fans get treated to great basketball. The Phoenix Mercury captured their 1st WNBA Championship by beating the Detroit Shock 108-92 in Detroit, Michigan before a very hostile crowd. The tight series was an entertaining contrast of styles. Phoenix, the WNBA's top-scoring team, made a commitment to run coach Paul Westhead's run-and-gun system., while Detroit is more defensive-minded, the head coach Bill Laimbeer urged the Shock to be more patient and physical several times during the series. But in the end speed prevailed.
Championship Series MVP Cappie Pondexter with the assistance of Penny Taylor and Diana Taurasi led the Mercury while Deanna Nolan and Katie Smith led the Shock.
