AWC - New Mexico Prep Football Game Cancelled 10-18 |

Yuma, Arizona - Arizona Western College has announced that the Matador Football game scheduled for this Saturday, October 18th against New Mexico Prep has been cancelled. The cancellation came after New Mexico Prep notified AWC officials late last week that due to a lack of travel funds, they would be unable to make the trip from Albuquerque, New Mexico to Yuma this weekend for the contest.
AWC officials tried to find an alternate opponent to fill the date but were unable to secure a quality opponent in time. “We’re extremely disappointed that we aren’t able to have a home contest this weekend,” said AWC Athletic Director Jerry Smith. “It’s unfortunate that New Mexico Prep had to cancel on us. We looked at three or four other possible alternatives to not having a game at all this Saturday, but in the end, there just wasn’t time enough for us to find a team in the region that had the open date and the ability to travel our way.”
The game will be counted as a forfeit victory for the Matadors with a 1-0 final score-per NJCAA rules. The Matadors’ upcoming three-game homestand is now shortened to a two-game homestand, and the AWC Football team will now have two weeks to prepare for the first opponent of that homestand, the Phoenix College Bears. The Bears will travel to meet the Matadors on Saturday night, October 25th, at Veterans Memorial Stadium. It will be a 7PM kickoff, and it will also be Servicemembers Appreciation Night with the Matadors on that same evening. There will be special festivities directed at military personnel and servicemembers in our community all evening long, including giveaways and a pre-game tailgate party. Military personnel and their families will get into the game absolutely FREE with a valid military ID. Ticket prices to the game are as follows: $5 for adults; $3 for seniors and kids ages 12-17; and free for MAA Members, AWC Students and NAU-Yuma Students. Veterans Memorial Stadium is located at 7150 West 24th Street-just ¼ mile west of the AWC campus, and 1/8 mile east of the intersection of 24th Street and Araby Road.
