Washington, DC - From outdated flood control schemes to harmful dams and mining projects, our nation’s rivers and clean water are at risk. American Rivers, the nation’s leading river conservation organization, today released America’s Most Endangered Rivers: 2009 edition spotlighting ten rivers in need of urgent action.

Tempe, Arizona - Two ASU juniors, both Native American students, plan to reach out to their communities in different ways after they receive their degrees. Both have won Morris K. Udall Scholarships to help them advance the lives of other Native Americans.

San Francisco, California - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has issued a violation notice and compliance order to Patrick Ricchiuti, president of P.R. Farms, following the discovery of the grower’s illegal expansion into the Fresno River. Ricchiuti bypassed flood control levees, illegally filling an area approximately 2,300 feet long and 45-250 feet wide and encroaching more than seven acres into the Fresno River.

Grand Forks, North Dakota - With the flood waters moving north, rural communities are being surrounded by water on all fronts. North of Fargo, U.S. Customs and Border Protection in coordination with FEMA is working with a host of local, state, and federal agencies to provide the appropriate support and resources to the Red River Valley flood and outer lying areas.
